Projects

The major project on the farm for the last four summers has been the building of the main community farmhouse from natural materials like adobe, strawbales and local wood using hand craftmanship. It has been a large undertaking and an incredible experience. See some photos below of our process. This year we will also be building a covered outdoor classroom. Students from SMU and farm camp participants will learn about a variety of natural building techniques as they take part in the building process.

Vision for the farmhouse:

Our vision for the farmhouse is to use it as a space to fulfill the mission of Weeping Willow Farm. In addition to living space for the farm community, volunteers and guests, the farmhouse includes a large teaching/play/study and creative space. In the open space we will offer classes for youth and adults as well as academic support and wellness programs. There is also an open space for community gatherings and meals and a community kitchen. The kitchen can also be used for classes on food preservation, cheesemaking and other homesteading skills.

The summer of 2025 will bring the next phase of the building project. In 2022 we installed wood decking on the upper floor from local red fir that we harvested from the national forest and milled onsite. Each piece of wood represented many hand processes-harvesting, milling, planing and installing. We restored antique Indian doors and installed them, mudded the interior and exterior of the building and over the winter insulated the roof. In 2023 we did finish mud plastering in half of the downstairs, poured a mud floor in the downstairs bedroom, built a Rumsford-style kiva fireplace and a masonry heater with a pizza oven and finished the downstairs bathroom. In 2024 we completed the downstairs including the kitchen. Our goal for 2025 is to complete the upstairs including the classroom space/art studio and additional accommodations and bathroom.
